About Cathays

Cathays is a densely populated residential district, walking distance from the town centre. In fact, by virtue of the student population, Roath and Cathays is the most densely populated city region in Western Europe.

The name is believed to be a corruption of Cat Hayes - the latter part meaning open common land. Cat is a corruption of Cad - meaning battle in Welsh. So presumably the site of a former battle.

Cathays became a suburb of Cardiff in 1875.
