History
Originally a coachhouse built in the early 19th century alongside a canal. Apparently a 'ludicrous name' competition generated its unusual name. However, historical books refer to a former name as the 'Red Cow'.Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) was a frequent visitor. His bust can still be seen as part of the pub frontage.
Alledgedly haunted, 2005 is the centenary of the current building - the original smaller pub built alongside since demolished.

Inside
Attracting mostly regulars, with the odd studentm this is a community and family pub, with children's parties, discos and so on. It is a friendly, welcoming pub, with occasional live music, live singers, comedians and even drag artists.Worth visiting just to see the backwards clock, a long term fixture.
Offers home made food. When the Manager removed the home made rice pudding from the menu there was uproar!
